I’d appreciate some advice on rail passes. I’m travelling with my 12 yr old daughter to Japan in Dec, for 24 days.
We’ll be spending 4 days in Tokyo on arrival, then heading to Kyoto for approximately 4 days. We may do a day trip to Nara, then head to Naoshima & Hiroshima. In our last week ( beginning on New Year’s Day) we will ski for a week in Nozawa Onsen until 9 jan & then leave japan the next day (10 jan).
We will go & see the snow monkeys either before we arrive in Nozawa Onsen or when we leave Nozawa Onsen. We may stay overnight at Shibu Onsen.
Ive done some calculations & I’m contemplating getting the 21 day JR pass , instead of the 14 day pass. I would validate it when I leave Kyoto. If I got the 14 day pass, I would need to purchase a ticket from Nozawa Onsen to Tokyo, which is approximately $113 Aust. The extra 7 days on the 21 day pass would cost$146.
Any advice would be appreciated.

From what I see, you are close to making a 14 day pass pay off, but not the 21 day pass. You don't have to do too much more riding to close the gap, however. So it's up to how much you are willing to expand your plans.
You can also use this simple calculator to see if your plans pay off.

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.
Hope that helps.
