I'm a bit confused, do I need to buy JR Pass? Some of my friends say I dont and some says I need to.
My Itinenaries are
1. From Narita Airport to Tokyo ( stroll around Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno) April30-May3
2. From Shinjuku to Kyoto (Strolling around Kyoto (May 3-5)
3. From Kyoto - Osaka Airport

A 3 day subway pass for Tokyo could save you some money though.

And the 1000 yen bus is the cheapest way into Tokyo:

But if you are willing to take a day trip from Tokyo to one of the nearby sights like Nikko, Karuizawa, Izu, or Kusatsu (and all are worthwhile places) and then also use the Narita Express from the airport to Tokyo and Haruka train from Osaka to KIX (if you depart on May 6th) then a 7 day pass would pay off. So it's up to you.
Be aware also that you are going to Japan during Golden Week, which is one of the peak travel seasons in Japan, so many places will have a lot more people than usual. And if you don't have your hotels secured by now, you may be in deep trouble.
And by all means take at least half a day and go see the Nara Park area in Nara. The Todaiji Temple is an absolute must see place.
Just for your reference, you can see regular rail fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia:

So educate your ill-informed friends who still think just a one way trip makes the pass worth it. Please remember though that you can't use the Nozomi bullet trains with the JR Pass.
