My friends and I will need to buy both a 21 and 14 days for our whole trip and we’re wondering how the activation works when you need two JR Passes. Are we able to activate both at the start of our trip?
Hi, You can activate 2 passes as you mention, but the period of usage for them *cannot* overlap.
I do raise the question of needing 5 weeks straight of rail passes though. Many people on long trips often travel so slowly that the pass might not pay off. Or, a series of regional passes http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2357.html might be more cost effective for you. Be sure to check on if you are at least breaking even with the passes you buy.
You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia. http://www.hyperdia.com Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.
