Hi everyone,
I will be traveling to Japan in the coming months for 10 days and was considering getting the 7 day JR pass for my trip. I will fly into Tokyo and stay there for 4 days. I will then travel to Kyoto and stay there for the remainder of the trip until I take a train back to Tokyo the day I am to fly back home. I plan on doing day trips to Nara and Osaka as of now while in Kyoto.
Lastly, I plan on activating the pass the day before I leave for Kyoto as to ensure I have it for the to/from train to Tokyo.
Would I pay for the pass based on my trip? If not, are there any alternatives.
Thanks!

With the round trip plus if you take the Narita Express just once, a 7 day JR Pass does pay off.
However, there is one other alternative that is far cheaper that you might look at - the japanican ticket.

It is much cheaper, plus you can take the fastest bullet train, the Nozomi with it so you arrive 30 minutes faster.
It does not cover the trips between the Kansai cities nor going to the airport, but going to Nara/Osaka is not that expensive, and if you go to Narita you can go really cheaply with the 1000 yen bus.

So it's up to you.
