I'm spending Friday-Tuesday in Tokyo, then Tuesday-Thursday (or Friday) in Kyoto, then a night in Hiroshima and back to Tokyo on Sunday. Is this itinerary doable on with the JR pass? If not, what is the best and most convenient option?
You can easily do it on a 7 day pass, and save a lot. And IMHO for Tokyo 3-4 days is enough, so you could use the Pass for a day trip or 2 outside of Tokyo - there are many fine places, like Nikko, Kamakura, Izu, Kusatsu, Karuizawa, etc. Just be sure to do all your long distance traveling within the 7 days. And if you can, spare at least half a day for Nara - it is well worth it and has some of Japan's very best sights.
