I am traveling from Shinjuku to Kyoto one way. I don't need a 7 day pass. Can I buy Jr pass just for that destination? Can I buy it while I am in Japan? Thanks
There are regional passes you can use for the Tokyo area, as well as for in Kyoto or the Kansai area. There is no pass for going one way to Kyoto though, and a 7 day pass would not pay off for such a one way trip, unless you extended it like taking a day trip down to see Hiroshima/Miyajima. Most regional passes can be bought in Japan, but the full JR Pass must be purchased before you arrive in Japan.
Will you be taking any other trips in the Tokyo or Kyoto areas? As Tenjin said, there are regional passes available, but it's impossible to say whether they would be worth using without knowing more about your itinerary.
If Shinjuku to Kyoto is definitely the only major journey you will be making, it may be best to just buy a one-way ticket at the ticket office in the station before you travel.
