7 days or 14 days pass

Dear Sir, We are going to japan in Dec 2016. But can't decide which one is economic for us. We will stay in Tokyo for 4 nights 5 days then go to Hakone for 1 night 2 days. Then go to Kyoto, Osaka and Hirochima? Do you think we need 14 days. Or may be 7 days more economic. Should we just use regional pass while we are in Tokyo?

    Hi,
Ultimately it is up to you - there are plenty of good places to visit in both the Tokyo area and Kansai area. There are a few things which you should know:
    1) If you start and end in Tokyo, and use a 14 day pass down to Hiroshima and back, you will in fact get your money's worth for the cost of the pass.
    2) If you choose to leave and return to Tokyo within a week, you will in fact get much greater savings since the 7 Day Pass costs a lot less. And if you get the 7 Day Pass, for the Tokyo area you can get a Tokyo Wide Pass which is ¥10,000 for 3 days. Together they'd still be less than the 14 Day Pass.

Some places you could visit include Nikko, Kamakura, Karuizawa, Izu, and Kusatsu.
For Hakone, a JR Pass won't help much - but you can get a Hakone Free Pass to save money.

Many travelers split their time 50/50 between Tokyo and Kansai. You certainly don 't have to do that if you don't want to. It's just up to you to decide if what you want to see in Kansai/Hiroshima will take more or less than 7 days, and plan accordingly.
