Hi, what is the most cost efficient option for the following travel plans:
- Tokyo on 7th April
- Tokyo to Kyoto on 8th April
- Kyoto to Nara on 11th April
- Nara to Tokyo on 13th
Thank you for your help

  • Hi,
Well if you mean cheapest, the highway bus costs the least. But it's extremely time consuming, and time clearly matters for you too.
You could also use the Hokuriku Arch Pass, especially if you want to see Kanazawa along the way. It's cheaper than the JR Pass, but takes a couple of hours longer - plus you need to return the same way.
Then there is the japanican discount ticket, which is also way cheaper than the JR Pass.
You can also ride the Nozomi train on it which you can't with the JR Pass. Travel between cities in Kansai is not covered, but overall still comes out as cheaper.
Then the 7 day JR Pass - you'd fall a little short of breaking even with your plans, but if you come from Narita and ride the Narita Express just once with it, you'd at least get your money's worth. If you go beyond Kansai to take a day trip to say, Himeji or Hiroshima, then the JR Pass is the way to go.
Also if using Narita, the 1000 yen bus is the cheapest way if not using the JR Pass.

After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.
